  • [01] MEXICAN PRESIDENT - CYPRUS PROBLEM

Cyprus` new Ambassador to Mexico Vassilis Philippou presented his credentials to Mexican President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa, who assured that his government would continue to show an active interest in Cyprus.

He also said that he would continue to support the efforts of the government of the Republic of Cyprus for a just, viable and functional solution of the Cyprus problem to reunite the country, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

Philippou briefed the Mexican President on the course of ongoing UN-led negotiations, between President Demetris Christofias and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Mehmet Ali Talat, to achieve a political settlement and thanked him for the steadfast and constant stance of Mexico

    [02] INTERIOR MINISTER - IMMIGRATION

Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis said on Thursday that immigration was an international phenomenon, which has positive and negative elements, adding that policies were needed in Cyprus and Europe to decisively tackle illegal immigration and at the same time highlight the positive aspects of legal immigration.

Speaking in Larnaca after a meeting of the Red Cross European Platform for Immigrants in Cyprus, Sylikiotis congratulated the Cyprus Red Cross on organising the meeting, noting that ``in Cyprus and Europe the issues of immigration and asylum are a priority.``

Sylikiotis said he has called for proposals in the framework of the EU Solidarity Funds, noting that in this way ``immigration can become positive for society and the development of EU member states, as well as the countries of origin of immigrants.``
