[02] INTERIOR MINISTER - IMMIGRATION
Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis said on Thursday that
immigration was an international phenomenon, which has positive and
negative elements, adding that policies were needed in Cyprus and
Europe to decisively tackle illegal immigration and at the same time
highlight the positive aspects of legal immigration.
Speaking in Larnaca after a meeting of the Red Cross European Platform
for Immigrants in Cyprus, Sylikiotis congratulated the Cyprus Red Cross
on organising the meeting, noting that ``in Cyprus and Europe the
issues of immigration and asylum are a priority.``
Sylikiotis said he has called for proposals in the framework of the EU
Solidarity Funds, noting that in this way ``immigration can become
positive for society and the development of EU member states, as well
as the countries of origin of immigrants.``
