  • [01] RUSSIAN FM CHRISTOFIAS CYPRUS ISSUE

The meeting between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov that took place in New York, in the sidelines of the 64th UN General Assembly, has reaffirmed the common positions of Cyprus and Russia regarding the solution of the Cyprus problem, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

According to an announcement issued Friday by the Russian Foreign Ministry, during the discussion of the problem in the island, the community of views of the two countries towards a comprehensive, just and viable settlement in Cyprus that will be based on the UN Security Councils relevant resolutions, was expressed.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also noted that during the meeting, Christofias and Lavrov exchanged views on the current situation of the Russian-Cypriot relations, and reaffirmed the high level of cooperation in several aspects of the bilateral relations.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat have been engaged in UN-led direct negotiations since September 2008, with an aim to reunite the island.

[02] IACOVOU - ADVISORY SUBCOMMITTEE PROPERTY ISSUE

The Advisory Subcommittee, which was set up following a decision of the National Council at its last meeting, convened Friday and discussed the property issue. This was the first meeting of the Advisory Subcommittee and it lasted two hours.

Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou, who chaired the meeting, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the discussion, adding that he had made an introductory briefing on all documents submitted on the negotiations table from time to time on the matter.

He said that the political parties participating in the meeting had expressed their views and a discussion had taken place. Iacovou stressed that everyone had spoken having in mind the importance of the property issue in the entire process for the solution of the Cyprus problem. He expressed hope that we would have convergences amongst ourselves first and wished for progress in the direct negotiations process.

    [03] CYPRUS SPAIN ROAD SAFETY

Cyprus with the experience of Spain aims to reduce traffic accidents and deaths on the roads, through cooperation and exchange of expertise. Spanish experts attended on Friday a meeting of the Road Safety Council of Cyprus, headed by the Minister of Communication and Works Nicos Nicolaides.

Speaking after the meeting, Nicolaides pointed out that Spain is a country with great success in curtailing road safety and has managed to reduce deaths from road accident between 2003 and 2008 by 44%, achieving that way the EU goal to reduce road accidents by half in five years.

There are issues to be discussed with our friends from Spain, experiences to be exchanged and expertise that must be learned said the Cypriot Minister.
