    The Cyprus problem as well as issues concerning bilateral ties will be discussed between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad.

    President Christofias departs Sunday night to Damascus, for a two-day official visit at the invitation of President al-Assad.

    During the visit, the Cypriot delegation, comprising Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou, and Minister of Communication and Works Nicos Nicolaides, will sign bilateral agreements on culture, sports, agriculture and the environment, social insurance and telecommunications.

    President Christofias will also hold a series of meetings with the Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Naji Otri, the Speaker of the People`s Assembly of the Syrian Arab Republic Mahmoud Al Abrash, and the Patriarch of Antioch and all the East Ignatius IV.

    [02] OVERSEAS RESOLUTIONS

    Overseas Cypriots, who gathered in Nicosia for their annual Conference, have adopted a series of resolutions, in which they express their support to the efforts of the Cypriot President to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem and urge foreign countries to exert pressure on Turkey to change its stance and contribute to the achievement of a viable solution in Cyprus.

    In their resolution to President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias, the World Federation for Overseas Cypriots (POMAK) and the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA), welcome the sincere effort made by President Christofias for the solution of the Cyprus problem and express their support to Cyprus ``during this new difficult effort which aims to reach a just and viable solution of our national problem.

    They urge the Cypriot government and the National Council the top advisory body of the President for the Cyprus problem to continue working with unity so that an agreed Cypriot, just, viable and functional solution can be achieved at the negotiations, in the UN framework, without suffocating deadlines or arbitrations.

    [03] PRESIDENT EDWARD KENNEDY - CONDOLENCES

    Cyprus President Demetris Christofias has sent a letter of condolence to Vice President of the USA and President of the US Senate Joseph R. Biden, on the death of Senator Edward Kennedy.

    According to an official announcement, in his letter, President Christofias stressed that Senator Kennedy was a great defender of freedom and human rights. President Christofias also noted that Senator Kennedy was a firm supporter of the struggle of Cyprus for a just solution to the Cyprus problem.

    Senator Kennedy was also a genuine friend of Cyprus and since the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus in 1974 he was, together with you, Mr Biden, one of the most firm supporters of our just struggle for the achievement of an overall solution of the Cyprus problem, based on rule of law and the respect of human rights, the Cypriot President stressed.

    [04] PEACE PLATFORM BICOMMUNAL EVENT

    Cyprus Peace Platform organizes on September 1, a bi-communal event on the occasion of the World Peace Day. The event will take place at the Ledra Palace Hotel, in the Nicosia UN-controlled buffer zone.

    Speaking at a press conference, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot members of the Platform, announced that on Tuesday, September 1, two simultaneous marches will take place. The first will start from the Eleftherias Square in Nicosia, in the government controlled areas, and the other will start from the occupied areas of Nicosia. The two marches will meet at the Ledra Palace Hotel in the buffer zone. The event is organized and supported by 20 Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot organizations.

    In a joint communique, the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot organizations note that the World Peace Day is a day when people from all communities, raise their voice for peace.
