    President Demetris Christofias has congratulated two Cypriot athletes, who have excelled in the World Athletics Championships, currently underway in Berlin. Kyriakos Ioannou won on Friday the silver medal, in the men`s high jump in the World Athletics Championships. Eleni Artymata finished in 8th place in the womens 200 metres.

    According to an official statement issued on Saturday, President Christofias said that he warmly congratulates our champion Kyriakos Ioannou on his great success to have won the silver medal in the men`s high jump in the World Athletics Championships. In the same statement, President Christofias congratulated Cypriot athlete Eleni Artymata who succeeded in reaching the women`s 200 meters final, becoming the 8th best athlete in the World in her field.

    He also congratulated Cypriot World Champion George Achilleos, who won the silver medal in skeet, in the 2009 ISSF Shotgun World Championships in Maribor, Slovenia. I warmly congratulate the coaches and everyone who has contributed to the success of our athletes. These successes promote Cyprus internationally, making us proud and showing the great potential the Cypriot people have, said the President.
