  • [01] UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY CYPRUS ISSUE

The 64th session of the UN General Assembly will take place on 15 September at the UN headquarters, with the Cyprus problem being among the issues that feature on the list of topics to be examined.

According to the UN website, the general debate will be held from 22 September until 2 October.

The items that are included in the provisional agenda of the 64th regular session of the General Assembly include a note by the Secretary General, maintenance of international peace and security, under which the Cyprus issue falls, promotion of sustained economic growth and sustainable development in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly and recent UN conferences, development of Africa, promotion of human rights and effective coordination of humanitarian assistance efforts.

It will also deal with promotion of justice and international law, disarmament, drug control, crime prevention and combating international terrorism in all its forms and manifestations as well as organisational, administrative and other matters.

On the question of Cyprus, according to the provisional agenda of the General Assembly, it notes that the latest report of the Secretary-General to the Council on the United Nations operation in Cyprus was issued on 15 May 2009.

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias is expected to be in New York City during the general debate week.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the islands northern third.

President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat have been engaged in UN-led direct negotiations since September 2008. The first phase of the talks was concluded this month and the second phase will begin on September 3, 2009.

    [02] POMAK PRESIDENT - STATEMENTS

President of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK) Haris Sophoclides has expressed the support of overseas Hellenism to the struggle of the President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and the political leadership to reunite Cyprus and its people.

Sophoclides, speaking on arrival at Larnaka airport, said that POMAK would continue its decisive and effective support to the struggle for a viable and democratic solution to the Cyprus problem, which will be based on UN and EU resolutions, securing the human rights of all citizens.

He also referred to the16th Annual Conference of the Central Council of the World Federation for Overseas Cypriots (POMAK) and the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA), and the Conference of the Executive Council of the World Organisation for Young Overseas Cypriots (NEPOMAK) to be held in Nicosia, from 24-28 August.

Particularly, he said that during the conference we will exchange opinions and views on ways to intensify our enlightenment efforts for closer cooperation and more effective coordination of our activities in the countries we live in and especially in Britain and USA in order to exert their influence so that Turkey is persuaded to submit constructive proposals at the current talks between President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

He noted that President Christofias works persistently and patiently, adding that at all 40 meetings with Turkish Cypriot leader, he proved his goodwill and his political will to reach a Cyprus solution, which will serve the interests of both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, bringing peace and prosperity to our island.

Unfortunately, he continued, Turkeys expansionist aspirations, its provocative attitude and intransigence remain an obstacle to the solution of the Cyprus problem, noting that Turkey still insists on holding the Turkish Cypriots hostages, and while it appears caring about ending the so-called isolation of the Turkish Cypriots, it is asking for ransom to facilitate its EU accession negotiations.
