  • [01] ĒĻUSE PRESIDENT - TURKEY - REPERCUSSIONS

Cyprus House President Marios Garoyian warned Ankara that there will be strict repercussions for her if she continues to infringe and violate every principles of justice, the acquis communautaire and the rules of the international legal order and to refuse to fulfill her obligations toward the EU and the Republic of Cyprus.

Speaking during an anti-occupation event orgnanised by the municipalities and organizations of the Turkish occupied district of Kyrenia, Garoyian said Turkey must take into consideration these warnings and realize that, as an EU member, the Republic of Cyprus has a crucial and decisive role in the evaluation process of Turkeys accession course. He also stressed that if Turkey continues to maintain this stance, Cyprus is in the position and has the potentials to terminate the European dreams and the European pursuits of Ankara.

Garoyian said that for over three decades now the UN are making efforts with one or the other process to lead things to an agreed settlement based on a bizonal bicommunal federation, but unfortunately have not achieved to do this so far because obviously they have not addressed with the determination they had to the Turkish intransigence and the Turkish arrogance.

He wondered how the UN will safeguard credibility, prestige and truth if they are not able to make Turkey respect their principles and resolutions and abide by all those dictated by the international law and the principles of the international legal order.

Certainly the responsibilities of the UN and generally of the international community are enormous for the fact that the Cyprus problem is pending for a long time. For thirty five years an international problem of invasion and occupation, an international crime remains unsolved and unpunished.

Garoyian said that the UN and the powerful countries of the international community must realize this truth and must oblige Turkey to respect the international law, the human rights and the rules of the international legal order.

He said that some of them instead of inventing ways to lift the burden of the responsibilities from Turkey and trying to help Turkey, either by facilitating her to become a powerful country in the region as she wants to or to have its accession negotiations go on unhindered, and instead of trying with dilemmas, pressures or blackmails to entrap the Greek Cypriot side, either trough tight timetables or through arbitration, they better turn their attention and their efforts towards Turkey.

He added that the key for a Cyprus settlement is in Ankara, which instead of responding positively to the good will of the Greek Cypriot side to find a just, functional and viable settlement of the Cyprus question, it outlines maximalist positions.

Especially this period Turkey is trying to dictate and impose her own conditions both as regards the form and the content of the settlement of the Cyprus problem and its accession course, he added, noting that at the same time Ankara alleges that it supports efforts for a Cyprus settlement.

    [02] FOREIGN MINISTER - TURKISH CYPRIOTS -

The so called isolation of Turkish Cypriots will end when Turkish occupation ends and Cyprus problem is solved, Foreign Minister Marcos Kyprianou said on Wednesday after the annual Meeting he had with the Heads of Diplomatic Missions of the Cyprus Republic at the Foreign Ministry.

Kyprianou was commenting on a press release issued by the British Foreign Office referring to a ruling issued by the Administrative Court of the High Court of Justice, Queens Bench Division, of the United Kingdom that dismissed an application for the granting of permits to conduct direct flights, between the UK and the airport operating illegally in the occupied area of the Republic under the name of Ercan``.

Invited to comment on the decision, Kyprianou said that this is a legal decision, adding that international conventions are valid and being implemented which is something that Turkey must realize.

He pointed out that international legitimacy is something that binds all countries and especially EU member states.
