[01] ABBAS - VISIT TO CYPRUSPresident of the Palestinian Authority and Chairman of the PLO Executive Committee, Mahmoud Abbas, arrives in Cyprus later Wednesday for a two day official visit.Abbas will arrive this afternoon at Larnaca Airport where he will be greeted by Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou and the General Delegate of Palestine in Cyprus Khalid Najjar. His first meeting will be with President of the Republic Demetris Christofias at 1800 local time at the Presidential Palace. After a tete-a-tete meeting, official talks between sides will be held. Abbas will sign the Visitors Book and then statements to the Press will follow. The Palestinian leader will attend a dinner Wednesday evening with the heads of the diplomatic missions of the Arab countries at the Cyprus Hilton Hotel. On Thursday, Abbas will be received by the Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church Archbishop Chrysostomos II and then will depart for the House of Representatives for a meeting with Speaker Marios Garoyian. President Christofias will host an official lunch given in Abbas honour tomorrow at the Presidential Palace where there will be toasts and exchange of gifts. Abbas departs for Amman on Thursday afternoon. [02] CIVIL SOCIETY EVENT CYPRUS PROBLEMThe significant role civil society could play before but most importantly after a solution of the Cyprus problem is found, was underlined at an event organised on Tuesday in Nicosia titled The role of civil society in supporting the peace and reconciliation process.The event, which was organised by the Management Centre and the NGO Supporting Centre, was addressed by the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Taye Brook Zerihoun, Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou, advisor to the Turkish Cypriot leader Ozdil Nami, Director of NGO Support Centre Michalis Avraam and Director of the Management Centre Bulent Kanol. The panel which followed was attended by former Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Ilter Turken and University of Athens Professor Theodore Couloumbis. In his address, Zerihoun said that one still cannot speak of a single Cypriot civil society, mainly due to the continuing division of the island. However, he said that despite many difficulties, the civil societies on both sides have persevered in their commitment to work together to foster trust and understanding between the communities and help achieve peace and reconciliation. Indeed, civil society groups have at various times in the past few decades provided the only channels for communication and contact between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, he noted. [03] CYPRUS - H1N1 CASESEighteen new cases of H1N1 flu have been confirmed in Cyprus during the past 24 hours, increasing the total number of confirmed cases to 135, the Health Ministry announced.According to a press release, eleven of the new cases concern Cypriots. So far 304 persons with flu symptoms have been subjected to laboratory tests and 135 have been diagnosed with the virus. The Health Ministry said the flow of incidents is fully monitored and there is no cause for concern. Furthermore it notes that despite the fact that the new flu has taken a pandemic dimension and the number of cases is expected to increase, the symptoms of the flu remain mild. [04] CYPRUS - DAVIS CUPEverything is in place and set for the Cyprus-Ireland tennis games for the Davis Cup, and from July 10 to 12 tennis fans will be able to watch the games at the National Tennis Centre. Cyprus` national team is ready for the games and is aiming at a victory that will bring it closer to first league.Chairman of the Cyprus Tennis Federation Filios Christodoulou told a press conference that on Wednesday a dinner will be hosted to honour the Cyprus Sports Organisation, which is celebrating the 40th anniversary since its establishment, and the Cyprus national tennis team, which entered the Davis Cup for the first time in 1985, when it lost to Ireland 4-1. Referring to the schedule of the games, Christodoulou said that on July 9 the official draw of the games will take place in Nicosia and that the opening ceremony would be held on July 10, followed by the beginning of the games. The winner of each game will be the player to reach three sets first and the country to win will be the one to achieve at least three wins.
