President Demetris Christofias is working with great consistency and dedication to open the checkpoint at Limnitis, on the northwest, to facilitate movement between the islands northern Turkish occupied areas and the southern government controlled part of the country, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou stated here Monday.

Asked if the government is aware of Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talats statement that after the opening of the checkpoint people will be allowed to settle at Kokkina, Stephanou said it would be best to concentrate on the opening of Limnitis checkpoint for which we have been trying very hard since March 2008, as there is a reference to this in the 21st March 2008 agreement between Christofias and Talat.

Kokkina, a coastal village on Cyprus` northwestern coast, is currently under Turkish military occupation. Kokkina is accessible only through the government controlled areas of the Republic or by sea.

The Spokesman recalled that after the opening of a checkpoint at Ledra street, in the capital Nicosia, the two communities committed themselves to working for the opening of more checkpoints, with Limnitis being the top priority.

Since then, the President of the Republic has been working with consistency and great fervour to open this checkpoint. We are still waiting for the opening of the checkpoint, he concluded.
