[01] CYPRUS LEADERS - NEW MEETINGPresident of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat are meeting on Thursday in the framework of direct negotiations which began last September with a view to reach a solution in Cyprus and reunify the island.UN Secretary Generals Special Adviser for Cyprus, Alexander Downer, will be attending today`s meeting. During their last meeting, on May 14th, the leaders discussed economy issues. Tomorrow, they are expected to decide on joint papers on economic matters. They also exchanged views on the opening of a crossing point, at Limnitis, on the north east, to facilitate movement to and from the islands northern Turkish occupied areas. In statements after the last leaders` meeting, President Christofias had said he expected an answer from the Turkish Cypriot leader concerning the opening of Limnitis crossing point, at their next meeting, tomorrow. The government of Cyprus has pledged it is ready to open the crossing point to facilitate free movement but the Turkish Cypriot side has asked for the supply of electricity in the area of Kokkina as well as fuel in order to give its consent to the opening of the crossing point. [02] CYPRUS - SYRIA - MEMORANDUMCyprus and Syria have signed a memorandum of cooperation in the sector of renewable energy sources and saving energy.The memorandum was signed in Nicosia by Cypriot Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides and Syrian Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade Amer Husni Lutfi. Paschalides and Lutfi exchanged views regarding issues of mutual interest and signed a protocol of cooperation on technical and educational issues in the sector of saving energy and renewable energy sources. They also agreed to promote and strengthen cooperation in the sector of energy. Furthermore, Lutfi invited Paschalides to visit Syria in the near future to continue discussions on the opportunities for cooperation between the two countries. [03] HELLENIC BANK - PROFITHellenic Bank Group closed 2008 with a profit, before tax, of 44.6 million euro, despite marking lower profit compared to 2007.Speaking during Wednesdays HB Shareholders Annual General Meeting (AGM), both the chairman of the board of Directors Andreas Panagiotou and the banks CEO Makis Keravnos said that despite the negative economic climate worldwide, the Group has marked profits. They both noted that the HBs solid foundations, strong fluidity, sufficient capital and very satisfactory indicators will help the bank overcome the economic crisis. They said that despite developments, and bearing in mind the markets conditions, the group decided to give a 02-cent final dividend to shareholders per share for 2008. Together with the interim dividend of 05 cents that was given to shareholders in October 2008, the total dividend for 2008 given to shareholders reached 21 million euro.
