  • [01] PRESIDENT - QATAR - VISIT

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias began today a two-day official visit to the state of Qatar where he will hold a series of contacts in Doha with the leadership of the country.

Christofias is heading a multi- member delegation and he is accompanied by his spouse Elsi.

According to the program of the visit, President Christofias will have a tete a tete meeting with the Emir of the state of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, which will take place at the office of the Emir.

An official welcoming ceremony will take place before the meeting.

Bilateral agreements will be signed and official talks will be conducted at the end of meeting.

In the afternoon, President Christofias and his spouse and the members of the official delegation will pay a visit to the new airport site of Doha, a project which is under construction by a Cypriot company.

After that, they will attend a reception hosted by the Ambassador of Cyprus to the state of Qatar Panicos Kyriacou in honour of the President of the Republic of Cyprus and the First Lady.

President Christofias` first day of visit to the country will be concluded with a private dinner.

The Cypriot delegation comprises the Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou, the Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis, the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides, the Government Spokesman Stefanos Stefanou and other officials.

    [02] UNFICYP - MADATE

The United Nations Security Council plans to renew the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), in May.

Announcing the Security Councils program for May, Russian Permanent Representative in the UN, Vitali Curkin, whose country holds this months UNSC presidency, said that consultations would begin 22nd of May.

On May 22nd we plan to have consultations on the UN Force in Cyprus. Later this month we hope to adopt a Security Council resolution, which will extend the mandate of that operation, he said.

Meanwhile, UNSG Ban Ki Moon is expected to submit to the members of the UNSC his report for the renewal of UNFICYPs mandate by the end of next week.

The UN Secretariat and the five permanent UNSC member states agreed to speed up the process for the adoption of the UNFICYP resolution so that it does not coincide with Turkeys UNSC presidency, in June.

According to a diplomatic source, Turkey did not raise any serious objections to that, since as president of the UNSC it would have difficulties either to recognise the Republic of Cyprus, or to continue its current provocative stance.

Although the resolution will be adopted in May, the UNFICYPs mandate will not be affected. It will begin June 15th and end December 14th, 2009, until its further renewal
