European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso pointed out the need for a solution to the Cyprus problem, noting that a Cyprus settlement is important for the EU-Turkey relations.

Speaking after a meeting with Turkish President Abdullah Gul in Brussels, Barroso said that a Cyprus solution is in the interest of the EU, Turkey and Cyprus.

Describing the opportunity for a Cyprus settlement presented by the current UN-led negotiations as the best for a long time, Barroso said that the Cyprus problem sometimes cast a shadow over the relations between Turkey and the EU.

It is important the two sides in Cyprus show goodwill and all concerned to offer their good offices. I am aware that Turkey supports these efforts for solution and I hope it will encourage the interested parties, he said.

Cyprus, an EU member since May 2004, has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat entered in UN-led direct negotiations since early September 2008 and have held 24 meetings so far.

    [02] CYPRUS - EU - SOLAR ENERGY

Cyprus ranks first in an EU report concerning installed solar collectors per capita, Cypriot Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Antonis Paschalides said on Thursday.

Addressing a conference on Renewable Source of Energy Paschalides said ``today Cyprus innovates globally concerning the use of solar energy for water heating purposes with 90% of the households and 50% of the hotel units having solar water heating systems.``

Cyprus has a long tradition in Renewable sources of Energy, dating from the 1930`s with the windmills for water pumping, he added.

He noted that due to the increased public interest, the government prepared a new Action Plan for the period 2009-2013, which inter alia aims at fulfilling Cyprus` commitments stemming from the EU acquis communautaire.

Paschalides added that Cyprus energy policy is fully harmonised with the EU energy policy and shapes having in mind the provision of ample, safe, clean and cheep energy for the protection of the environment and the development of the people`s standard of living.
