  • [01] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - CYPRUS QUESTION

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias stressed the governments goal to achieve a settlement of the Cyprus problem that will terminate occupation and illegal settling of the islands northern third and will reunify its territory, people, economy and institutions, in the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, with political equality, as provided by UN Security Council resolutions.

Speaking during the Democratic Party (DIKO) Ordinary Congress, Christofias said High Level Agreements of 1977 and 1979, UN resolutions on Cyprus and the international and European law principles constitute the basis for a settlement, that must provide for a federal state with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship and a single personality, in which the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all the people of Cyprus, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins will be safeguarded and respected.

We work hard and with determination on this basis to reach a settlement that will make our people masters in their homeland, without giving any rights to foreigners to interfere to the domestic issues of our country, he added.

He assured that as the Greek Cypriot sides negotiator he defends principles, being ready at the same time to show flexibility with a view to reach to a mutually accepted compromise with our Turkish Cypriot compatriots.

Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat have been engaged in direct negotiations since September last year, with a view to reach a settlement of the issue of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.

    [02] GOVERNMENT EP RESOLUTION TURKEY

The government of the Republic of Cyprus has expressed satisfaction with the resolution, adopted by the European Parliament on Turkeys 2008 progress report.

The resolution is balanced and positive, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said, adding that for the first time December 2009 becomes a clear timeframe for Turkey, and if by then Ankara does not meet its obligations as regards the Additional Protocol, this would seriously affect its EU accession course.

[03] DEFENCE MINISTER - INFORMAL EU MEETING

Cyprus Defence Minister Costas Papacostas has described, in statements to CNA, as constructive the informal meeting of Defence Ministers of the EU Member States held in Prague March 12-13.

In the first session the Defence Ministers addressed the development of EU military capabilities and the EU military operations in Bosnia Herzegovina (ALTHEA) and in the Republic of Chad and in the Central African Republic(EUFOR TCHAD/RCA).

The first EU maritime operation (ATALANTA) was also examined by the EU Defence Ministers. Papacostas stressed that Cyprus National Guard officials participate actively to the ATALANTA operation and Cyprus` interest in such operations.

The second session of the meeting, focused on the cooperation of the EU with its strategic partners in the area of security, NATO, the UN and the African Union. Speaking during the meeting Papacostas said Cyprus is in favour of the enhancement of the cooperation between the EU and international military organisations. However, he noted that the EU should maintain its autonomy and not come under NATO military structures.
