  • [01] FM AUSTRALIA FIRES

Cypriot Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou has expressed Cyprus unreserved sympathy and solidarity with the people of Australia following the deadly fires which hit the country last month.

Kyprianou, who is currently visiting Australia, conveyed the solidarity of the people and the government of Cyprus to the people and the government of Australia for the tragedy which hit the country, causing the loss of many lives.

The Cypriot Minister, accompanied by mayor of Whittlesea, Mary Lalios, visited the Kinglake West area, which was badly destroyed by the fires.

    [02] FLINT TURKEY CYPRUS TALKS

British Minister for Europe, Caroline Flint, has expressed hope that Turkey will be more visible and practical in her support to the talks between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Ali Talat.

President Christofias and Talat entered since early September 2008 UN-led direct negotiations in a bid to bring about a solution to the Cyprus problem. So far they have had 21 meetings, covering the issues of Governance and Power Sharing and Property. In the next meeting they will start discussions on EU issues.

``As a friend of Turkey, we do recognise the important role they have to play in helping this process to succeed, Flint said last night speaking during a dinner hosted by the National Federation of Cypriots in the United Kingdom. Welcoming Turkish statements in support of the ongoing negotiations, Flint noted ``I am hoping to see in 2009 some more visible and practical support to accompany the talks.``

    [03] CHURCH ECHR TURKEY

The Church of Cyprus will resort to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) for the destruction of 522 churches in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus.

According to a press release, issued here by the Church of Cyprus, at the initiative of Archbishop Chrysostomos II, the Church is prepared to take Turkey to the European Court on account of the continuing destruction of 522 churches in the northern Turkish occupied areas of the country.

The Church will also highlight the need to safeguard Cyprus religious and cultural heritage, much of which has been pillaged or destroyed since the 1974 Turkish invasion of the island.
