[01] SPOKESMAN - CYPRUS ISSUE
Cyprus President Demetris Christofias is cautiously optimistic as to
the prospects for a Cyprus settlement, Government Spokesman Stephanos
Stephanou has said.
Invited to comment on the course of the ongoing direct negotiations
between Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat,
Stephanou said that the President of the Republic has said many times
that despite the fact that he is not satisfied by the progress achieved
at the negotiations so far, he remains cautiously optimistic as to the
prospects for a Cyprus settlement.
Stephanou refrained from commenting statements by Talat after his
meeting on Tuesday with Christofias, noting that negotiations are
taking place at the negotiating table.
President Christofias and Talat have been engaged in direct
negotiations since early September this year, aiming at reuniting the
island, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
