[01] KYPRIANOU - TURKEY - PROVOCATIONS
Turkey`s harassment of a Norwegian vessel, which was conducting an
exploratory survey for hydrocarbon reserves within Cyprus exclusive
economic zone, will have an impact on Ankaras EU accession course,
Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou said on Tuesday.
He was commenting on an incident which occurred November 13th, when a
Turkish warship forced a Norwegian vessel, which was conducting an
exploratory survey on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus within its
exclusive economic zone, 27 miles off the south coast of the island, to
cease its operations and withdraw within the territorial waters of the
Republic of Cyprus, under fear for the lives of its crew and the
integrity of the ship.
It is clear that Turkeys tactics do not comply with its obligations, as
outlined in the EU-Turkey negotiating framework. If those tactics
continue, they will have an impact on Turkeys EU accession course,
Kyprianou stressed, in statements after a meeting with leader of the
Democratic Rally Nicos Anastasiades.
Kyprianou described Turkeys policy as a policy of the 19th century,
noting that no modern state, especially a state which wishes to join
the EU, sends warships to hinder another states rights.
