Good progress on the issue of the judiciary has been made at Thursdays
meeting between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish
Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, in the framework of direct
negotiations, held since early September under UN auspices.
UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer,
speaking to reporters after the eighth meeting of the leaders in the UN
controlled buffer zone, said the leaders will meet again on Monday to
discuss deadlock resolving mechanisms.
Downer stressed the importance of maintaining momentum, noting the
discussions will continue into 2009. In his remarks about the result of
Thursdays meeting, Downer said the discussion was predominantly about
the judiciary and they made good progress on the issue of the
judiciary.
[02] HOUSE PRESIDENT ARMENIAN FM
The key to a solution of the Cyprus problem lies in Ankara, House
President Marios Garoyian has stressed, during a meeting with the
Foreign Minister of Armenia Edward Nalbandian, on the last day of his
official visit to the country.
Garoyian described the discussion with the Armenian Foreign Minister on
the Cyprus issue as very substantial, fruitful and constructive, noting
that they also discussed issues relating to Armenia, such as the
countrys relations with Turkey and Azerbaijan, as regards the
Nagorno-Karabakh issue.
We had the opportunity to exchange some thoughts on efforts to achieve
stability in the sensitive region of the Caucasus``, he added. Garoyian
briefed Nalbandian on the current phase of the Cyprus problem, and
referred to the continuing Turkish intransigence.
