[01] CHRISTOFIAS - TALAT - MEETING
President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish
Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat are meeting in Nicosia on Thursday, in
the framework of direct negotiations held since early September under
UN auspices.
Thursday`s meeting is being held in the presence of the UN Secretary
General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer, in the UN
controlled buffer zone.
Speaking at the Presidential Palace on departure for the venue of the
talks, President Christofias said ``today is a new day`` and that ``we
are continuing the discussion with Mr. Talat.``
Asked if he shared Downer`s optimism, President Christofias said ``the
UN, as long as this process continues, will express optimism.``
``Of course we are always more reserved,`` he added.
