President of the Republic Demetris Christofias fully informed the National Council on Monday on the course of the direct talks he is engaged in with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat with an aim to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem.

According to a statement read out to reporters by Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou, the members of the National Council submitted their views and opinions in a positive and constructive atmosphere.

The National Council is the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem and comprises the leaders of parliamentary parties.

Stephanou said that the functioning of the National Council will be discussed at the next meeting, on November 24.

Replying to questions, Stephanou said there were difficulties in the negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem, noting that ``we knew this well before starting this process.``

He added that much effort would be needed, along with determination and flexibility, and pointed out that ``we are still at the beginning of the negotiating process.``

``We remain focused and dedicated to this process,`` he assured and expressed hope that the Turkish side would respond accordingly so that ``the road to the solution of the Cyprus problem opens.``
