[01] CYPRIOT WOMEN - PEACE RALLY
Under the slogan Now is the time for solution, reunification and peace
Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot women, members of various
organisations, trade unions and NGOs, gathered on the National Womens
Action Day for Peace at the check point, in Ledra street, in the
capital Nicosia to demand peace and the reunification of Cyprus. In a
joint declaration they adopted on Saturday, they sent a message of
peace to all women in Cyprus and the world at large and called on them
to strengthen the global struggle of women for peace in the whole world
while they expressed their desire to end conflicts and wars.
The womens organisations believe that the substantive talks between
Christofias and Talat can, with good will and determination, lead to a
bizonal, bicommunal federation, based on political equality as it is
defined in UN Security Council decisions. A solution based on the
resolutions of the UN Security Council, the High Level agreements and
in the framework of the joint statements of 23 May and 1st of July, the
declaration noted. UN resolutions, the High Level agreements and the
May and July statements by Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and
Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat provide for a bizonal
bicommunal federation, in a reunited Cyprus, with a single sovereignty
and a single international personality.
Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot women expressed their full support
for the negotiating process and their hope for a speedy solution of the
Cyprus problem and the reunification of their country. They also
express their will to contribute to the efforts for reconciliation and
rapprochement of the islands two communities, to build a happier future
for future generations which will allow them to live in peace, far from
prejudice and with respect for diversity.
