    Cyprus President Demetris Christofias arrived in Beijing on Thursday to attend the ASEM Summit (Asia-Europe forum) 24 - 25 October.

    During his stay in the Chinese capital, Christofias is expected to have meetings with heads of states and governments and other officials of countries attending the Summit.

    On the sidelines of the summit, President Christofias will hold bilateral meetings with the Sultan of Brunei, the Malaysian Prime Minister and Chinas Vice President.

    On Friday, the President will make an intervention during the discussion on the world financial crisis and in the evening he will attend a working dinner. On Saturday he will address delegates on the issue of promoting dialogue among cultures.

    The overarching theme of ASEM7 is `Vision and Action: Towards a Win-Win Solution`. At the summit ASEM leaders will focus their discussions on political, economic and social and cultural issues, including issues related to sustainable development.

    Launched in 1996 as an informal dialogue mechanism, the ASEM now includes 45 members, representing more than 50 percent of the world`s gross domestic product.

    The European side is represented by 27 nations of the European Union and the European Commission. The Asian members count 10 countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), China, Japan, Republic of Korea, India, Pakistan, Mongolia and the ASEAN Secretariat.

    President Christofias returns home October 26.

    [02] CYPRUS - MALTA - IMMIGRATION AND ASYLUM

    Issues concerning immigration and asylum dominated a meeting between Cyprus Interior Minister Neoklis Silikiotis and Maltas Minister of Justice and Home Affairs Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici.

    Speaking after the meeting at the Interior Ministry, Silikiotis said that Cyprus and Malta face the biggest problems as far as immigrant influx is concerned.

    [03] GREEK AMBASSADOR - COOPERATION WITH CYPRUS

    Greek Ambassador to Cyprus Demetrios Rallis assured on Thursday that cooperation between Athens and Nicosia is very close and continuous.

    Commenting on press reports according to which some political parties in Cyprus believe there is a lack of coordination between the governments of the two countries, Rallis said ``it is needless to stress that cooperation between Athens and Nicosia is very close, constant and deep.``

    [04] LHC INAUGURATION - CYPRUS

    A five-member delegation under Education and Culture Minister Andreas Demetriou represented Cyprus at the official inauguration of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN on 21 October.

    European Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik was among the dignitaries present in Geneva, Switzerland, for the official inauguration of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN on 21 October. Also present were French Prime Minister Francois Fillon, Swiss President Pascal Couchepin and numerous science ministers.
