[01] CHRISTOFIAS - TALAT - MEETING
The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President of the Republic
Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, are
meeting on Wednesday, in the UN protected area, in the framework of
direct negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem.
The UN Secretary Generals special adviser for Cyprus Alexander Downer
had said after last weeks meeting that the leaders continued their
discussions on the executive powers of the government, the presidency
and the vice-presidency in the framework of direct negotiations aiming
to solve the Cyprus question.
Representatives of the two leaders and experts met on Thursday under UN
auspices where they continued the discussion.
President Christofias and Talat began talks in early September with a
view to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite Cyprus, which
has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
