  • [01] GOVERNMENT OBAMA CYPRUS ISSUE

The government expressed here Friday satisfaction with statements made by US Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama, however, the Cyprus issue cannot be solved with mere statements but with specific deeds.

Asked if the government is satisfied with Obamas statements, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou told reporters that statements contain certain elements which can be true, that is, in Cyprus there is occupation, and a solution should be based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation.

These statements surely satisfy us, said Stephanou, adding that from there on, however, the Cyprus problem cannot be solved with statements alone but with specific actions and specific positions which must be based on the prospects for a solution and serve the interests of the people of Cyprus, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, a solution that must end the occupation and reunite Cyprus, the people, the economy and the countrys institutions, he concluded.

In a statement earlier this week, a spokesman of Obama notes that as president, Barack Obama will show U.S. leadership in seeking to negotiate a political settlement on Cyprus. He believes strongly that Cyprus should remain a single, sovereign country in which each of the two communities on the island is able to exercise substantial political authority within a bi-zonal, bicommunal federation.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.

[02] EU COMMISSIONERS CHILDREN - HEALTHY BREAKFAST

Two European Commissioners and a Cypriot Minister prepared healthy breakfast for pupils on Friday within the framework of introducing a campaign to promote the European Milk and Fruit Programme at schools.

European Commissioner Responsible for Agriculture and Rural Development Mariann Fischer Boel, together with European Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou and Cypriot Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Minister Michalis Polinikis, together with pupils from the Panagia Triherousa Elementary School prepared sandwiches, fruit salads and yogurt, on the sidelines of a conference organised by the Commission ``Europe`s rural areas in action: facing the challenges of tomorrow`` in Limassol.

Boel greeted the pupils, pointing out the importance of milk in their development and overall health. The three dignitaries then prepared healthy breakfast for the schools pupils.

The three also visited a pavilion at the schools premises which exhibited fruit and vegetables as well as dairy products, were shown the special projects and toys which the pupils had prepared and watched how halloumi cheese and trahanas, are made. They also tasted local cuisine.

[03] EDP COUNCIL EUROPEAN PARTY CYPRUS

The European Party of Cyprus, in view of the European elections, will host the biannual meeting of the European Democratic Party (EDP) Council, co-chaired by Francois Bayrou and Sandro Gozi, in Nicosia, on October 19.

Deputy President of the European Party Nicos Koutsou will be one of the Vice Chairmen of the meeting, while Vice President of the European Party Stratos Panayides will participate in the Secretariat.

Koutsou told reporters that ``EDP supports a European solution to the Cyprus problem, as well as the termination of the Turkish occupation, the institutional involvement of the EU and the necessity for the solution to be based on the acquis communautaire and the fundamental principles of establishment of the EU.``

[04] ETYK STRIKE NATIONAL BANK OF GREECE

The Cyprus Union of Bank Employees (ETYK) has called its members on a three-hour strike on October 20, as a gesture of support to their colleagues of the National Bank of Greece (Cyprus), who have been dismissed.

In a press release, ETYK says National Bank of Greece (Cyprus) employees have been dismissed ``without cause`` and ``arbitrarily,`` and informs its members that the law provides all employees with the right to join trade unions.

ETYK tells its members that ``anyone blackmailing you to leave the Union otherwise you will loose your promotion or will be transferred elsewhere or may even loose your job, is violating the law and must bear the consequences.``
