[01] BRUSSELS - CHRISTOFIAS - BROWNCypriot President Demetris Christofias met British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, on the sidelines of the European Council, which takes place in Brussels.Earlier, President Christofias received the Belgium - Cyprus Friendship Group at the Belgian Senate as well as Graham Watson, leader of the European Parliament`s Liberal Democrat group, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe. In the afternoon, President Christofias will represent the Republic of Cyprus at the European Council. The main issues to be discussed at the Council are the global financial crisis and ways to deal with it, immigration and climate change. [02] ATHENS - NIKIFOROSGreek Foreign Ministry Spokesman George Koumoutsakos has welcomed the cancellation of the annual military exercises of Cyprus armed forces, saying this was a positive initiative.The National Guard exercise, code-named Nikiforos, was cancelled following a decision by President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias. Koumoutsakos said this positive initiative helps create the right climate to strengthen the negotiating process to solve the Cyprus issue, which currently underway. [03] CYPRUS - BRITAIN BILATERAL RELATIONSCypriot Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides met with Chief Executive of the UK Trade and Investment Programme Andrew Cahn, with an aim to strengthen and improve bilateral trade relations, and especially relations for investment, tourism and energy.In statements to the press after the meeting, which was attended by British High Commissioner Peter Millet and Energy Director at the Ministry of Commerce Solon Kassinis, both Paschalides and Cahn said their meeting was constructive, fruitful and productive. Cahn said ``we have discussed a variety of issues about how we can increase the amount of trade and investment and tourism between Cyprus and Britain, we have looked in particular at the energy sector, where there are important developments in Cyprus both in the area of renewable and in the area of liquefied natural gas.`` ``We have discussed about how we can ensure that tourism is sustained,`` he said, noting that this sector ``is vital for the economy of Cyprus.`` He pointed out that ``British tourists are the largest component by far of tourists coming to this country and we want to work together to ensure that that continues.`` Cyprus News Agency: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
