  • [01] UNSG - DOWNER - MEETING

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was briefed on Wednesday on developments in Cyprus by Alexander Downer, his Special Adviser on Cyprus.

A UN Spokesman said the two discussed the state of the negotiations launched last month between the leaders under the auspices of the Secretary-Generals good offices.

They also discussed UN efforts to assist the two leaders in reaching at a settlement.

UN sources said that during his contacts on Thursday and Friday, Downer would meet UN Secretariat officials. They include Under-Secretary Generals for Political Affairs (B. Lynn Pascoe) and for Peacekeeping Operations (Alain Le Roy).

He is also scheduled to meet with the Representatives of the parties as well as the Permanent Representatives of Greece and Turkey

The same sources said Downer is scheduled to travel to Washington on Friday for meetings at the State Department, followed by additional internal UN meetings in New York on Monday, which include an informal meeting with the Permanent Members of the Security Council.

According to a UN Security Council Permanent member source, in its most recent statement on Cyprus, the Security Council looked forward to being briefed on the progress of the Good Offices Mission. So we expect Special Adviser Downer to brief the Council before too long - possibly this month, although the precise date will depend on his diary, the source said.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the islands northern third.

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat began substantive talks on September 11, aimed at reaching a comprehensive settlement.

    [02] ANORTHOSI - VICTORY - CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Anorthosis of Famagusta beat Athens Panathinaikos FC with 3-1 in Champions League Group B matchday 2, marking Cyprus` first ever victory in the Group stage.

Anorthosis, which defeated Greek champions Olympiacos CFP in the third qualifying round before holding Werder Bremen in Germany on matchday 1, now has four points and shares the group B lead with their next opponents, FC Internazionale Milan. Panathinaikos lies last with no points so far.

Anorthosis will face Internazionale in the group stage Matchday 3 on October 22, in Milan.
