[01] COMMONWEALTH MEETING - MINISTER
Cyprus Minister of Education and Culture Andreas Demetriou has said
that the Commonwealth has always supported practices aiming at bringing
together the islands two communities through a just solution based on
United Nations resolutions. Addressing the biennial International
Meeting of the Royal Commonwealth Society in Larnaca, on behalf of
President Demetris Christofias, Demetriou referred to the role and the
goals of the Commonwealth throughout the years.
The organisation set its goals from the very day of its existence.
These include the promotion of democracy, human rights, good
governance, the rule of law, free trade, multilateralism, individual
liberty and in general world peace, he said.
Referring to the ongoing direct talks between the leaders of the two
communities which began on September 3 with the aim to find a solution
of the Cyprus problem, he stressed that Cyprus is hopefully on the
verge of a peaceful settlement of the long standing issue through the
strenuous efforts invested by the President of the Republic and the
Turkish Cypriot leader Mr. Talat who seem determined to reach a viable
solution produced by Cypriots for Cypriots.
