  • [01] ECHR PRESIDENT - CYPRUS QUESTION - APPLICATIONS BY GREEK CYPRIOTS

The negotiating process aimed at a political settlement in Cyprus is not related to applications filed by Greek Cypriots, against Turkey, still pending before the ECHR, President of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), Jean Paul Costa has said.

Asked after a meeting with the President of the Supreme Court of Cyprus whether the peace process could hold back appeals by Greek Cypriots against Turkey, Costa said that we dont want to confuse the political settlement of problems and the judicial answers to the judicial questions which are before the ECHR.

I would like to be very clear in separating what is strictly political and which is out of our jurisdiction and the judicial and legal problems, he added.

Costa also expressed the hope that a future solution of the Cyprus problem will bring not only satisfaction but also relief to the ECHR which has so many cases.

Speaking about the round table meeting with the President Petros Artemis and judges of the Cyprus Supreme Court, he said that it was useful to receive some explanations about human rights in Cyprus and the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court, adding that this symbolises and strengthens the close traditional cooperation between the EHCR and the high courts of the member states.

Asked if the political situation in Cyprus makes some Court decisions, he said that sometimes the decisions of the ECHR are difficult not only in the case of Cyprus but in many other cases.

To the contrary it seems to me that the situation now maybe able to evolve and in the future we may hope that the solution of the Cyprus problem will bring not only satisfaction but also relief to the ECHR which has so many cases, he added.

The President of the Supreme Court Petros Artemis underlined that human rights in Cyprus are fully and strictly applied.

Referring to the meeting with Jean Paul Costa, he said that it was important not only because of the issues that have been discussed but also because of the interpersonal relationships which are being developed between seniors officials of the two institutions.
