    Twenty-nine young leaders from across the Commonwealth will meet the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Demetris Christofias as part of the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Leadership Programme (CYLP) taking place in Nicosia next week. As part of the programme they will also meet Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

    According to a press release, the delegates, specially selected from 23 countries worldwide, will gather in Nicosia on Saturday 13 September for a weeklong programme of events relating to the theme Conflict and Beyond.

    President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader will discuss conflict resolution with the delegates, who will also be taking a tour of the Green Line and participating in workshops with the British Council and United Nations Development Programme. The packed schedule will also include a visit to the Ledra Observatory and a tour of the Cypriot House of Representatives.

    [02] CYPRUS - EMPLOYMENT - INCREASE

    Cyprus employment rate increased by 3.2% in the 2nd quarter of 2008 compared to the same period of the previous year, according to statistical data (estimate) issued by Eurostat.

    The respective growth for the 1st quarter of 2008 was 2.9%.

    A press release issued by the European Commission, presenting a first estimate of Eurostat on employment rates in the Euro area and the EU27, said that the number of persons employed in the Euro area (EA15) rose by 0.2% (283,000 persons) in the second quarter of 2008 compared with the previous quarter.

    In the same period, the number of persons employed in the EU27 also grew by 0.2% (401,000 persons). In the first quarter of 2008, in both Euro zone and EU27 employment growth rate recorded an increase of 0.3%.

    [03] BAGHDATIS OPEN DORLEANS

    Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis will face Belgian Christophe Rochus for the semi finals of the Open d Orleans.

    The game will take place on Saturday evening (2330 Cyprus time).

    Baghdatis beat on Friday the French Alexandre Sidorenko with 2-1 (3/6, 6/2, 6/3).
