    Cypriot track and field athlete Antonis Aresti won the silver medal in the 200m T46 race, having clocked in with 22.15, at the Beijing Paralympic Games.

    The gold medal went to Francis Heath and the bronze to Ettiam Calderon. Cyprus is now ranking 24th in the medal chart, with one gold and one silver medal.

    Aresti will also compete on Thursday in the 400m T46 semifinals. The Cypriot athlete lost the full use of his left arm after an accident when he was a child that caused severed nerves.

    [02] FM ATHENS - MEETINGS

    Speaker of the Greek Parliament Demetris Sioufas has assured that the Greek Parliament and parliamentary parties support the people of Cyprus in their efforts to reunite their country, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

    Sioufas, who met on Tuesday Cyprus Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou, on an official visit to Greece, expressed the wish that direct talks between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat will have a successful outcome and lead to a European, democratic, viable and functional settlement of the Cyprus question.

    We have assured the Minister and asked him to convey our position to President Christofias and the people of Cyprus that the Greek Parliament, all parliamentary parties and all MPs stand firmly and with consistency by the people of Cyprus, Sioufas added.

    The reunification of Cyprus, he pointed out, will be to the benefit of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, so that they can enjoy the benefits of Cyprus accession to the EU.

    [03] MINISTER OF FINANCE CHINESE ENTREPRENEURS

    Cyprus Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis met on Tuesday representatives of the Chinese multinational company Hiking Group, as part of government efforts to attract foreign investment, especially from countries with big and important markets such as China.

    According to a press release issued today by the Ministry of Finance, the meeting is the continuation of contacts the Minister has had with a group of Chinese entrepreneurs.

    During the meeting, it is added, the representatives of the Chinese company referred to the very good economic conditions prevailing here and the prospects Cyprus offers as a business centre. They also expressed the companys intension to invest in business activities on the island.

    [04] COMMISSIONER FOR CHILDRENS RIGHTS COC

    Cyprus Commissioner for Childrens Rights Leda Koursoumba participated on Monday in the official launch of the Conference of the Council of Europe, under the theme Building a Europe for and with children towards a strategy for 2009-2011, taking place in Stockholm, Sweden, between 8-10 September.

    According to a press release issued by the Commissioners office here, in her intervention during the discussion on Eradicating specific forms of violence against children : The rights of Children in Institutions, Koursoumba noted that the eradication of violence exercised against children in child care institutions has been among her priorities, as the first Commissioner for Childrens Rights of Cyprus.

    She then referred to a number of complaints received by her office regarding violations of the right of children to protection from all forms of violence, allegedly, taking place in a particular care institution for the mentally handicapped.
