Full-fledged direct talks between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat began here , aiming to reach a comprehensive mutually acceptable settlement to the protracted question of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.

In statements before leaving the Presidential Palace for UN Secretary General Special Representative to Cyprus Taye-Brook Zerihouns residence where his meeting with Talat is taking place, at the presence of UN Secretary General Special Adviser for Cyprus Alexander Donwer and Zerihoun, President Christofias said he was cautiously optimistic about the talks.

Invited to say what his expectations are, Christofias said: I have repeatedly said that I am cautiously optimistic. My expectation is that of all the people of Cyprus, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriots, to give an end to the sufferings of the Cyprus people, an end to the division and reunite our country.

Invited to say if the Turkish Cypriot puppet regimes decision not to give permission to Greek Cypriots to pass through Limnitis crossing point to attend an organized pilgrimage to celebrate the Saint`s Mamas day on September 2, will overshadow the meeting, Christofias said it must not overshadow it.

President Christofias is accompanied by Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou, while Talat is accompanied by his adviser Ozdil Nami.

Greek Cypriot, Turkish Cypriot and foreign media representatives have gathered outside the residence to cover the meeting.

Christofias and Talat decided on July 25 to start full-fledged negotiations, under the good offices mission of the United Nations Secretary General.

The aim of the full-fledged negotiations is to find a mutually acceptable solution to the Cyprus problem, which will safeguard the fundamental and legitimate rights and interests of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The agreed solution will be put to separate simultaneous referenda.
