  • [01] CYPRIOT FOOTBALL TEAMS - CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Cypriot football clubs, Omonia and APOEL of Nicosia, qualified to UEFA Cup`s first round after knocking out Greek AEK and Serbia`s Crvena Zvezda Belgrade (Red Star), sparking a continued round of celebrations, after Anorthosis Famagusta FC triumph to become the first Cypriot club to compete in the Champions League group stage.

Omonia and APOEL will participate in today`s first round draw in Monaco, comprising 80 teams who will play two legs to form the 40 clubs that make up the group stage.

    [02] SPEAKER TURKEY

House of Representatives President Marios Garoyian said that without Ankaras will for a solution to the Cyprus issue based on UN resolutions, the High level agreements, international and European law, the UN will fall short of a solution and will bear the brunt of another failure.

In a speech at a gathering for those who fell in Turkish occupied Ashia village in 1974, Garoyian said the UN should therefore ensure that they turn their attention to Ankara to face with more determination and austerity Turkeys intransigence and secessionist plans.

He said that for a solution to be achieved, Turkey must decide that it wants a solution, noting that so far there is no such indication.

Garoyian warned that under no circumstances we will accept a solution based on Turkish conditions, noting that compromise is one thing, and submission to the conditions of the oppressor another.

    [03] TAXES - FINANCE MINISTER

Cyprus Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis assured that there would be not tax raises in Cyprus, noting that for this reason it is highly important that the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) remains effective and increases its tax collection capacity.

Recalling that Cyprus has the lowest taxes in the EU, Stavrakis said that ``in a time of economic recession with many European countries considering tax raises, our commitment remains, not tax increase in Cyprus.``

``Therefore it is particularly important the IRD to remain effective, to increase its tax collecting capacity and to expedite old taxes collection,`` he said in statements after visiting the IRD District of Nicosia office, in view of the deadline for temporary tax assessments for 2008 and self-assessments both for legal and physical persons regarding 2007.
