Cyprus President Demetris Christofias will attend the extraordinary European Council to take place in Brussels on Monday, 1st September, to discuss the situation in Georgia.

In an official press release issued here today, the Cyprus government expressed its deep concern over developments in Georgia.

According to the press release the Republic of Cyprus supports respect of international law, including respect of the territorial integrity of states, of the UN Charter and the principles of the Helsinki Final Act.

It is also in favour of the peaceful resolution of international disputes by political means, through negotiations and avoidance of unilateral action, which could deteriorate the situation in this sensitive region.

The press release also said that President Christofias will chair Wednesday a meeting of the Council of Ministers to be held at his country residence in Kellaki village.
