President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian has praised
the role of the Greek Parliament in the struggle of the people of
Cyprus to reunite their island. Speaking after meeting the presidium of
the Special Permanent Committee of Overseas Hellenism at the Hellenic
Parliament, here to attend the annual conference of overseas Cypriots,
Garoyian said they exchanged views on the latest developments and on
the common goal, which is to free Cyprus and reunite the country, which
has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
He said they discussed the role parliaments can play in strengthening
relations and ways to encourage overseas Greeks become more active in
shaping developments in their countries of residence. The Cypriot
Speaker thanked the Hellenic Parliament, its Speaker Demetris Sioufas
and the permanent committee members for their support in efforts to
find a settlement and their tireless efforts to promote even further
the Cyprus issue as well as for the active support they offer to
President Demetris Christofias.
Replying, chairman of the committee Nicolaos Tsartsonis said the
delegation was briefed about the negotiations which begin next month
between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities. We
believe that the political leadership in Cyprus is united in their
effort to deal with these negotiations, he said, expressing hope that
