  • [01] KYPRIANOU - GEORGIA - AGREEMENT

Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou welcomed on Wednesday the agreement between Russia and Georgia, which was presented by the French presidency of the EU, during the General Affairs Council.

He added that Cyprus supports the respect of the territorial integrity of Georgia, on the basis on relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

In his remarks at the Council, Kyprianou expressed satisfaction over the agreement between the two sides and the constructive role of the French presidency of the EU and the OSCE, adding that the success belonged to French President Nicola Sarkozy.

``Today we have achieved our aim for the immediate termination of hostilities. Now we must work towards avoiding any hostilities in the future,`` Kyprianou pointed out.

    [02] OVERSEAS CYPRIOTS - MEETING

The Cyprus problem, the contribution of Cypriots abroad to efforts for a political settlement in Cyprus and to the campaign to inform the international community about the continuing Turkish occupation of the islands northern part are among the issues to be discussed at next weeks meeting of Cypriot organisations abroad.

The 22nd Conference of the Central Council of the World Federation for Overseas Cypriots (POMAK) and the International Coordinating Committee Justice For Cyprus (PSEKA), and at the 4th Conference of the World Organisation for Young Overseas Cypriots (NEPOMAK) will be held in Nicosia, from 19-22 August.

The opening of the conference will be addressed by the President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias on Tuesday 19 August, at 7 pm.

During the conference, overseas Cypriots will have the opportunity to be briefed about the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and to discuss several issues that concern them.

    [03] CYPRUS - WATER

The first phase of unloading water from tankers, from Greece, is expected to be completed on Thursday, with the arrival of the sixth ship in Cyprus.

District Director of the Water Development Department Nicodemos Nicodemou said that five ships have already made two or three trips from Elefsina, in Greece, to Limassol, on Cyprus southern coast.

The arrival of the sixth ship on Thursday is expected to accelerate the procedure of importing water from Greece, since further analyses at the state laboratory, which takes around 48 hours, will not be necessary, he added.

``The water has always been tested. As stipulated in the contract, during the first trips of the tankers all analyses were carried out at the state laboratory and the water was found to be unadulterated. During the trips that followed the first journey, samples of water were taken and tested but these tests did not take as much time as the first analyses,`` he said.
