The official ceremony to welcome the Cypriot mission at the Olympic
Village in Beijing will be held on Saturday, in the presence of
President of the Republic Demetris Christofias.
President Christofias participated on Thursday evening in the banquet
hosted for heads of state and government in Beijing for the opening
ceremony. During the banquet, President Christofias met his
counterparts from France, Slovakia and Croatia, among others.
According to the Cyprus Sports Writers Union representative Petros
Hadjichristodoulou, who is covering the Olympic Games in Beijing,
President Christofias said Cyprus will be promoted through its
participation in the Olympic Games, especially if the Cypriot athletes
win medals.
[02] GROUND HANDLERS AIRPORTS
Ground handlers at Larnaca and Paphos International Airports pledged
their commitment on Friday to work more intensely so that ground
services at the two airports reach the level required by modern and
European countries such as Cyprus.
Ground handlers Cyprus Airways-Swissport-Vassilopoulos and Louis-led
LGS Handling as well as operators Hermes Airports Ltd met Friday
Minister of Communications and Works Nicos Nicolaides to discuss the
situation after the two companies were fined by the government 112
thousand euro for bad airport services as the tourist season reached
its peak.
In statements after the meeting, Nicolaides said he was informed about
the current situation prevailing at the airports, adding that all
factors involved, including the Ministry and the Civil Aviation
Department, will play their role in an effort to get rid of the
problems that continue to exist at the airports.
