  • [01] PROMINENT CYPRIOT JOURNALIST PASSES AWAY

A prominent Cypriot journalist, Demetris Andreou, died Friday night, at the age of 68. Andreou was first admitted to Nicosia General Hospital on July 20 after suffering a stroke during a live TV talk show. He later suffered a heart attack.

Andreou studied journalism in France, where he actively participated in the students` protests and general strike that passed to history as May 1968. Later on, he worked for a number of French newspapers, television and the French News Agency (AFP). After returning to Cyprus, he began working for the semi-governmental Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC). As a reporter and later political editor and producer of political talk shows for CyBC he covered all major events of Cyprus recent history. Many consider Andreou the father of political reportage in Cyprus. After his retirement in 2001, Andreou cooperated with private TV channels and had his own column in a local daily newspaper.

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias contacted the President of the Union of Cypriot Journalists, Andreas Kannauros, to express his sincere condolences, a Union press release says. The Union adds that Demetris Andreou had worked as a journalist for more than four decades, serving journalism with dignity. In a press release the Board of Directors of the Cyprus News Agency expresses deep sorrow at the death of the prominent journalist, adding that Demetris Andreou worked for many years with zeal and dedication. CyBC Director General, Themis Themistocleous, described Demetris Andreou as a teacher of journalism, expressing sincere condolences to his family.
