[01] TURKISH INVASION ANNIVERSARY - MEMORIALSJuly 20, 2008, marks 34 years since the Turkish invasion and subsequent occupation of Cyprus` northern third, the consequence of which are still felt across the island.Today, Cyprus pays tribute to those killed during the invasion and those still missing, with memorials and other events in the government-controlled areas of the Republic. Air-raid sirens wailed today at 0530 local time (0230 GMT), when the Turkish invasion began 34 years ago with the landing of Turkish troops on the island`s northern shores. At 0800 local time a memorial service for the army officers and soldiers killed during the invasion took place at Makedonitissa Tomb in Nicosia, in the presence of Cypriot President Demetris Christofias other officials and representatives of the Greek government and parliament. Furthermore, at 0930 local time an official memorial ceremony was held at Faneromeni Church in Nicosia in the presence of President Christofias. Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou will give the eulogy. A series of other anti-occupation events will take place during the day. Political parties have issued statements condemning the Turkish invasion and occupation. [02] US - CYPRUS QUESTION - DOWNER`S APPOINTMENTThe US has welcomed the appointment of Alexander Downer as the UN Secretary General`s special adviser for Cyprus and assured that it remains committed to supporting the UN and Cyprus in efforts to solve the Cyprus question.A State Department spokesman said Downer`s appointment, the meetings of the two leaders in Cyprus, as well as the establishment of the working groups and technical committees, and the opening of Ledra Street ``show a renewed commitment to resolving the Cyprus problem. The spokesman assured that the US remains committed to supporting the UN and Cyprus on this issue. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has appointed former Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Downer as his special adviser on the Cyprus problem.
