[01] EP PETITIONS COMMITTEE - FAMAGUSTA

The report of de Oedenberg received 22 votes, while that of Libicki only two votes. Both other members of the delegation that visited Famagusta, Carlos Josee Iturgaiz Angulo and Willy Meyer Pleite, agreed with the content of de Oedenberg`s report. The fourth member of the delegation was Libicki.

According to the recommendations of the report, ``UNSC Resolution 550(1984) must be respected, and implemented without further delay by all parties and, with regard to the petitioners` concerns, the institutions of the European Union must actively support and promote a solution which leads to the full restoration of property to its legitimate owners in Varosha.``

Furthermore, ``Turkey must withdraw its occupation military forces from the Republic of Cyprus, an EU territory, starting with the return of the Famagusta sealed-off section to its lawful inhabitants in compliance with the above resolution.``

``The Slovenian and the French Presidencies of the EU must give their support so that this issue is resolved by the end of 2008, and the European Parliament is urged in this context to give full backing to this objective,`` and also, ``if there are no visible results by the end of the year, the PETI Committee could re-examine the current state of play and reflect on further actions I.E. possibility of bringing the issue of the Famagusta petitioners to plenary,`` according to the recommendations.

[02] MOSCOW PATRIARCH - CYPRUS

Speaking during a religious ceremony attended by Cyprus Archbishop Chrysostomos II, who is paying an official visit to Russia, Alexios expressed regret over the destruction of Cyprus religious heritage in the islands areas occupied since the Turkish invasion of 1974, expressing however the belief that Cyprus will become a united island with no dividing lines and occupation.

On his part, Archbishop Chrysostomos expressed the gratitude of the people of Cyprus to the government, Church and people of Russia for their constant and serious help to the people of Cyprus.

[03] FM - LEBANON

Kyprianou will discuss with his Lebanese counterpart Fawzi Salloukh the two countries bilateral relations, the Cyprus question and developments in the Middle East. The two Ministers will also look into the two countries cooperation in the framework of the Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean.

During his visit, Kyprianou will be received by the President of Lebanon and the Prime Minister of the country Fouad Siniora. He will also have separate meetings with the Speaker of the House Nabih Berri and political party leaders.

[04] KYKKOS - MONUMENTS - BOOK

Speaking during a press conference to present a publication titled ``The religious monuments in Turkish occupied Cyprus. Views and actions of a continuing devastation``, Hodjakoglu said the church was razed in May and, according to Turkish Cypriot testimonies, the aim was to use the debris for works on buildings being erected in Trikomo village.``

``This is happening at a time when we have started a process to solve the Cyprus problem, while a technical committee has been set up for cultural heritage issues. It is not the only church razed intentionally,`` he said, adding that the timing of the recent destruction ``takes on a different dimension and leads to disappointment about the future.``

Perdikis said the Kykkos Monastery Museum is in contact with the chairman and the members of the technical committee on cultural heritage, who have been informed on the case of Saint Catherine church.
