  • [01] HOUSE PRESIDENT - CHRISTOFIAS - UN SG MEETING

Cyprus House President, Acting President of the Republic Marios Garoyian expressed his ``absolute agreement`` with the positions expressed by President of Republic Demetris Christofias on the Cyprus problem, during his meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Paris yesterday.

In statements to the press, Garoyian reiterated his party view against the imposition of tight timeframes for the solution of the problem, adding that a possible solution should be based on the discussions among the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, without serving the interests of Turkey.

``Undoubtedly the role of the UN should be facilitative,`` he said.

Replying to questions regarding tomorrow`s meeting between Ban and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat in Berlin, Garoyian recalled that the Cyprus President insists on principled positions which are consistent with the international law, the UN Charter as well as the EU values, which, according to Garoyian, form the process within which the process for a Cyprus should move.

Christofias and Talat will meet for the fourth time on July 25. Working groups and technical committees were set up after their first meeting in March this year with a view to prepare the ground for direct fully fledged negotiations between the two sides, to reach a settlement of the problem of Cyprus, divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.

    [02] BELGIAN SENATE - RESOLUTION - CYPRUS

The Belgian Senate plenary approved a resolution, calling the two communities in Cyprus to reunify the island.

The resolution tabled by Senator Phillipe Monfils and approved by an overwhelming majority (54 in favour, 4 against, 4 abstentions) requests the Belgian Government to encourage the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus to implement the July 8 2006 agreement, urging the parties and countries involved to contribute to the developments and maintain the climate of reconciliation, trust and mutual respect and to avoid any statement which could harm the on going constructive dialogue.

It also encourages the international organizations to be vigilant so no foreign power could affect the ongoing negotiating process and calls on these organisations to take the necessary sanctions if necessary.

The Belgian Senate also notes with satisfaction UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon`s appointment of Alexander Downer as his Special Adviser on Cyprus, recalling that in his report dated December 3 2007 Ban stated that ``Im convinced that the responsibility for finding a settlement lies on the Cypriot themselves.`` An amendment proposed by Ceder Jurgen calling the EU to suspend the accession negotiations with Turkey until Ankara withdraws its occupying forces from Cyprus was rejected with 52 votes against and 4 in favor.

    [03] CYPRUS` ARCHBISHOP - MOSCOW - VISIT

Archbishop of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos II` departs for Moscow for an official visit, at the invitation of Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexios.

A press release issued today by the Holy Archbishopric of Cyprus said that during his stay in Moscow, Chrysostomos II` will hold talks with Alexios.

The primate of the Cypriot Church II` will also hold contacts with Russian government officials and will address an event on July 17 organised by Cyprus Tourist Organisation in the Cypriot Embassy in Moscow, on ecclesiastical tourism.

Chrysostomos II will return on Sunday, July 20.

[04] AUSTRALIAN AHEPA - CYPRUS SOLUTION

The Australian division of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) after an extraordinary congress in Cyprus on July 14 approved a resolution expressing ``full support`` to the efforts of the Cyprus President Demetris Christofias to achieve a solution to the Cyprus problem.

The resolution expressed ``full support to the Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and his Government and their commitment to achieve a just, viable and permanent solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation, as defined by the UN Security Council the EU acquis communautaire and the principles on which the EU is founded on.``

AHEPA also calls on the Turkish Cypriot leadership ``to work constructively in the framework of the ongoing process, so that the necessary progress will be achieved which will yield results and prepare the ground for the commencement of full-fledged negotiations based on the UN SG good offices mission.``

It also calls on Turkey to end the military occupation of Cyprus, to terminate the illegal settlement of the Turkish occupied areas as well as to fulfill its EU obligations and implement the Ankara protocol and to nornalise its relations with the Republic of Cyprus.
