President of the Republic Demetris Christofias met with Thomas Hammarberg, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, and reviewed human rights issues linked to the specific situation in Cyprus.

According to a press release, issued by the Council of Europe, Hammarberg in his three-day visit will assess current developments as regards refugees and asylum seekers, human trafficking and conditions of detention.

The visit is part of the activities carried out in accordance with the Commissioner`s mandate to promote full respect for human rights in Council of Europe member states, with a particular focus here on the contribution of an enhanced human rights compliance to a lasting settlement, the press release adds.

    [02] HOUSE PRESIDENT - KYRENIA

House of Representatives President Marios Garoyian discussed the Cyprus problem and the financial problems faced by the Kyrenia Municipality with a delegation of the Turkish occupied town`s Municipal Council, headed by Mayor Maria Ioannou.

Speaking after the meeting, Ioannou said the delegation presented Garoyian with the positions of the people of Kyrenia on the Cyprus problem, the form of the solution they wish for, and asked the House President to brief them on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem.

She noted that they also discussed the financial situation of the Municipality, adding that the Union of Turkish Occupied Municipalities expects the government to promote its unanimous decision regarding the allocation of state funds for an enlightenment campaign to inform world public opinion about the continuing Turkish occupation of part of Cyprus and the employment of office personnel.

    [03] NATIONAL COMMITTEE - DRUGS

The National Committee against Drugs convened on Monday at the Presidential Palace, in a meeting described by President Demetris Christofias as the first act in the creation of the pancyprian network of a strong social alliance against drugs, eight years after the creation of the Anti-Drug Council.

The meeting was presided over by President Christofias, who is also chairman of the National Committee, and was attended by representatives of political parties, trade unions, youth and social organisations, Church representatives and in general representatives of all organised groups involved in the fight against addictive substances.

President Christofias blamed ``a series of social conditions and situations, such as poverty, marginalisation, commercialisation, unemployment and the degradation of principles and institutions`` for the spread of drug use.
