[01] HOUSE DEBATE - LISBON TREATYThe House of Representatives is holding a debate on the Lisbon Treaty today, which is expected to last over five hours.In the morning, the Parliament will proceed with routine legislative work. Acting Permanent Secretary of the House, Socrates Socratous has told CNA that representatives of the six parliamentary parties will speak in the morning and in the afternoon session the leaders of the parliamentary parties will take the floor. The discussion will be concluded with a vote on the bill for the Lisbon Treaty in late afternoon. The ruling AKEL party has already decided to vote against the Treaty. The Democratic Rally, the Democratic Party, the Social Democrats EDEK and the European Party will approve it and the Green Party will abstain from the vote. Lisbon Treaty has been approved by 19 member states of the EU and rejected by the Irish people in a referendum last month. [02] NATIONAL COUNCIL - MEETINGThe President of the Republic of Cyprus, Demetris Christofias, informed Wednesday the members of the National Council, top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus issue, about the latest developments regarding the Cyprus problem.The National Council, comprising leaders or representatives of parliamentary parties, convened one day after the third meeting between President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, since the Cypriot President was elected to the presidency early this year. The National Council, which convened for two hours, will continue its meeting on Friday afternoon, during which the leaders of the political parties will express their views. [03] FOREIGN MINISTER - ISRAELCypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou is in Israel for a one-day long working visit.Kyprianou will meet his counterpart and Deputy Prime Minister Tzipi Livni and Jerusalem Patriarch Theophilos III. The Minister returns to Cyprus on Thursday. [04] EU HEALTH COMMISSIONER - SOCIAL AGENDAThe European Health Commissioner Androulla Vasiliou, who had proposed the directive for patients rights in cross-border healthcare, has said that it aims to clarify how patients can exercise their rights to cross-border health care, while at the same time providing legal certainty for Member States and health care providers. Speaking before a Commission meeting, Vasiliou pointed out that the proposal ensures that the quality and safety of health care will be guaranteed throughout the Union, and promotes cooperation between health systems to provide better access to specialised care``.Te European Commission adopted the proposal for a directive, as part of the Renewed Social Agenda, to facilitate the application of European patients` rights in relation to cross-border healthcare, as well as a communication on improving co-operation between member states in this area As part of the Renewed Social Agenda. According to a press release, with this proposal the Commission aims to provide legal certainty on this issue. This follows calls from both the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers for the Commission to propose a specific initiative on cross-border healthcare, in a way explicitly adapted to, and respecting the unique nature of the healthcare sector. In addition, the proposed Directive provides a solid basis to unlock the huge potential for European cooperation to help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of all EU health systems.
