  • [01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - CYPRUS QUESTION

Cypriot President Demetris Christofias has said that he expects measures to be announced soon on topics on which there is common ground at the bicommunal technical committees, set up to prepare the ground for substantive negotiations between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus.

Speaking after a meeting he held with the heads of the technical committees, President Christofias said it was a very constructive meeting and hopefully, soon ``we will be in the position to announce some measures``.

He noted that the advisors of the two leaders are meeting to discuss topics on which there is common ground at the technical committees.

Invited to comment on recent statements by Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan that there are common elements between the leaders` statement of May 23 and an announcement of the Turkish National Security Council for a Cyprus solution based on two states, President Christofias said the two statements have nothing in common.

``I can not accept the wording `new partnership```, the President stressed.

He added that intense negotiations for a Cyprus solution will be held at some stage, and underlined that the Greek Cypriot side will defend its principles and positions.

He further said that the basis of the bizonal, bicommunal federation is one state with one sovereignty, one nationality and one international personality.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Technical committees and working groups, set up after the March 21st Agreement between the two leaders are meeting in order to prepare the ground for full - fledged negotiations.

President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat met May 23 and reviewed the work achieved at the bicommunal committees and teams

    [02] ZERIHOUN - CYPRUS PROBLEM

The UN is encouraged by the initiatives and commitment of President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat and believes that the new climate and momentum in Cyprus should me maintained, said UN Secretary Generals Special Representative here Taye-Brook Zerihoun.

Answering questions after an event to mark the UN Peacekeepers Day, Zerihoun said that it is up to the leaders to determine if it is realistic for reunification talks to begin next month.

I think they (leaders) will be the ones to determine the degree to which this is realistic or not. We are encouraged and I think the Secretary General and the Security Council have said this, we are encouraged by the initiatives and the commitment the two leaders have shown. I think there is broad agreement that there is a new environment, conducive to the re-engagement and to a commitment to see this process through for a conflict that has been around for four decades or more, I think that a month here and a month there, should not be an issue, he remarked.

[03] EUROPEAN COMMISSION - OCCUPIED CYPRUS - PROTECTED AREAS

The European Commission has signed a 1.5 million euro contract with the consortium led by the Polish company NIRAS IC Sp. z o.o. ``to prepare detailed plans for management and protection of six specially protected areas in the northern part of Cyprus. These sites are likely to be designated as `Natura 2000` sites following a comprehensive settlement and reunification,`` a press release issued by the European Commission has said.

The consortium will also provide assistance for building the professional capacity of the Turkish Cypriot community stakeholders responsible for nature protection.
