  • [01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - NEW UN SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE

Tay-Brook Zerihoun, new Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Chief of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), was received on Wednesday by President of the Republic Demetris Christofias.

Speaking after the 45-minute meeting, Zerihoun said he had expressed to the President the good wishes of the SG and reiterated the support of the UN for the process.

He told reporters he will have ample opportunity to speak in the coming days and urged them to give him a little more time.

Zerihoun will cross to the Turkish occupied north later Wednesday to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

The new UN envoy arrived at a time when the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities are engaged in discussions with a view to prepare the ground for substantive negotiations between the community leaders, leading to a comprehensive settlement.

These talks take place following an agreement in March between Christofias and Talat.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the islands northern third.

    [02] CYPRUS OIL PRICES

Cyprus, whose energy needs depend almost entirely on oil imports, is feeling the impact of soaring oil prices worldwide and the competent authorities will check to see if an increase in fuel prices is justified, a senior government official has said.

Solon Kasinis, head of the Energy Department of the Commerce, Industry and Tourism Ministry, told CNA today that the Ministry has provided the Competition Protection Commission (CPC) with evidence to help the Commission in this task.

He explained that the situation is out of control as many factors contribute to the hike in oil prices, some of which are beyond our control.

Kasinis comments come as oil companies announced a new increase in the price of fuel on the island.

[03] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - CHINA CONDOLENCES

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias sent a letter of condolences to the President of the Peoples Republic of China Hu Jintao, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of thousands of lives and widespread destruction, caused by the earthquake that hit China.

ĞAt this hard time, for the friendly people and the Government of the Peoples Republic of China, I communicate with you to convey on behalf of the people and the Government of Cyprus, as well as on my own behalf, our profound grief and our sincere condolences to the families of the victims of yesterdays devastating earthquakeğ, the President states in his letter.

The President of the Republic telephoned the Ambassador of China last night to express his profound emotions over this tragic event and asked him to convey to the Chinese leadership the warm condolences of the Cypriot people and himself personally over this major destruction.
