  • [01] CHRISTOFIAS - TALAT - NEW MEETING

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou announced that Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat will have a new meeting on May 23.

``President of the Republic Demetris Christofias will meet with the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Mehmet Ali Talat on Friday, May 23 at 11:00 (local time), Stephanou says in a statement.

He adds that further details regarding the meeting will be released at a later stage.

President Christofias and Talat met on March 21, in the presence of the then UN SG Special Representative to Cyprus Michael Moller and agreed to set up a number of technical committees and working groups. They also agreed to meet again at the end of June ``to review the work of the working groups and technical committees, and using their results, to start full-fledged negotiations under the auspices of the Secretary-General of the United Nations.``

Christofias and Talat had a chance to come together on Wednesday and have a short talk during a social bicommunal event, held on Wednesday at the Ledra Palace hotel.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

[02] CYPRIOT PRESIDENT - HOUSE PRESIDENT

Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Cyprus House President Marios Karoyan exchanged views on the current phase of the Cyprus issue.

Speaking after the meeting, Karoyan told reporters that the President is moving in the right direction.

We had a very useful and substantial discussion as regards the current phase of the Cyprus issue, the work at the Working Groups and we also had an exchange of views on issues of internal governance, the House President said, noting that there is common understanding in nearly all the issues under discussion.

Asked if he is satisfied with the work so far at the level of the Working Groups and the Technical Committees, Karoyan said that it is early to talk about developments and progress. Discussions have begun and there is an exchange of views, but we have a long way ahead of us.

[03] FINANCE MINISTER - LONDON - COMPANIES AND FUND MANAGERS

Cyprus Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis said he aims to attract fund managers and corporations based in the UK, which are reported considering moving their headquarters from the country due to a proposed tax reform.

Stavrakis, who traveled recently to London to meet with companies and funds managers, said that he would inform the President of the Republic Demetris Christofias on the suggestions and proposals he has on the matter.

``I will brief him on the results of the contacts and some suggestions and proposals I have, which, if implemented, will attract a number of fund managers, something which perhaps will increase significantly the public revenues and create job positions,`` Stavrakis said in statements.

[04] UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY - NEW DEPARTMENT

In 2009 the Cyprus University of Technology will open up a new department for undergraduate studies in the fields of commerce, shipping and finance.

The new department will welcome its first 40 students in September 2009. The Cyprus University of Technology intends to offer postgraduate studies in shipping and finance at a later stage.

Addressing the international science and research workshop «Finance and Development 2008» in Limassol, Chairman of the Universitys Interim Governing Board, Professor Antonis Constantinides, said that the Department for Commercial, Financial and Shipping studies aims to connect academic research with the shipping sector.
