[01] PAPASAVVAS - DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL
Akis Papasavvas has been appointed Deputy Attorney General of the
Republic.
The appointment was announced by Government Spokesman Stephanos
Stephanou, who said President Demetris Christofias, exercising his
constitutional rights, has appointed Papasavvas to the post, which has
been vacant for some time.
Papasavvas, a lawyer by proffesion, will assume office on Tuesday, May
6. He has served in the past at the Law Office of the Republic.
Replying to questions, the Spokesman said that there is no legal
impediment in Papasavvas appointment.
[02] CYPRUS HOUSE - WEU MEETING
President of the Committee on Legal Affairs of the House of
Representatives Ionas Nicolaou departs Sunday for Paris, to participate
in a meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Western European
Union (WEU). The meeting, to take place on Monday, is organised with
the French National Assembly in the run-up to the French EU presidency,
which begins on July 1st this year.
According to an official press release, the conference will deal with
strategic options for European security and defence. Participants will
discuss the European Security Policy in conjunction with the Treaty of
Lisbon and the EU strategic environment, as well as the possibilities
to develop common European policies in strategic areas. The role of
parliamentarians in the implementation of a new European Security
Strategy will also be discussed.
The Committee of Parliamentarians and Public Relations will discuss the
effects of armed conflict on the environment and parliamentarian
cooperation on security issues in the Black Sea.
