  • [01] BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY - CYPRUS QUESTION

Britain is determined to play its role in supporting the drive for a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband has said.

In statements to London Greek Radio (LGR), Miliband said ``the election of the new President in Cyprus is a very significant event,`` and that ``it creates a historic opportunity to build the comprehensive settlement that it is in the interests of both communities, and it is certainly something that is yearned for by the large Cypriot community in the UK.``

``Ive been meeting people in Harringay and Enfield and its clear to me that people here have very strong, personal, family, business, cultural links back to Cyprus and they want to see the leaders showing real leadership and I can assure you that Britain is determined to play its role in supporting the drive for a comprehensive settlement,`` he noted.

[02] CYPRUS - ANNUAL INFLATION RATE

The annual inflation rate in Cyprus was 4.4% in March 2008, recording a decrease compared to February`s 4.7%, according to figures released by Eurostat.

In the Euro area, annual inflation was 3.6% in March 2008, up from 3.3% in February, while a year earlier the rate was 1.9%. Monthly inflation was 1.0% in March 2008.

Cyprus, Greece and Luxembourg were the only countries of the Eurozone to record a drop in March`s inflation rate.

The seriousness of the situation is reflected in the fact that the Eurozone countries, with the exception of The Netherlands, recorded an inflation rate over 3.1%, while the theoretical ceiling set by the European Central Bank is 2%.
