[01] NATIONAL COUNCIL - STATEMENTThe National Council believes that, following initiatives by the Greek Cypriot side, there is now a positive climate which can contribute towards efforts for a negotiated settlement in Cyprus, Government Spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said here today.The Council, the top advisory body to President Demetris Christofias on the Cyprus issue, was briefed on Wednesday about recent development in Cyprus as well as the Presidents contacts both at home and abroad. The Spokesman said a constructive climate prevailed during the meeting, questions were asked and replies were given by the President. A statement, issued after todays meeting, said that the National Council has ascertained that as a result of our initiatives, a positive climate has been created which our side will make use of towards promoting negotiations on the Cyprus issue. The President of the Republic has asked the members of the National Council to submit their proposals on the functioning of the Council, which will be examined in the near future, the statement concluded. The proposals, to be submitted by the parliamentary parties members of the National Council, will be sent to the President in writing and a discussion will shortly take place at the Council, Stefanou added. A new meeting of the Council will be scheduled at a later date, he concluded. Participating in the meeting were the ruling AKEL party, the main opposition Democratic Rally party, the Democratic Party, Socialist EDEK, the European Party and the Ecologists Environmentalists Movement. The session was also attended by former Presidents Tassos Papadopoulos, Glafcos Clerides and George Vassiliou, Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou, Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou, the Government Spokesman and Undersecretary to the President Titos Christofides.
