The National Council, top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem, will convene on Wednesday to discuss recent developments in the Cyprus problem, in its first meeting since Demetris Christofias was elected President of the Republic in February.

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou told CNA that "during the National Council meeting, the President of the Republic will call on the political forces to submit in a short time their views on the upgrading of the National Council."

"The upgrading and more effective functioning of the National Council are among the commitments of the President of the Republic," he added.

Furthermore, he said Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou and Ozdil Nami, advisor to Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, will meet again on Monday "with an aim to prepare the commencement of the work of the working groups and technical committees, which is expected to begin soon."

Referring to the Ledra Street crossing point, which opened on Thursday, Stephanou said everything was running smoothly and the relevant agreement was being observed.
