    Ledra Street, which was the main shopping street of the capital Nicosia, has opened on Thursday at 0900 local time (0600 GMT), for the first time in nearly 40 years.

    At 0600 local time (0300 GMT) the National Guard post moved away and the security of the area was officially undertaken by the Police.

    The road which leads to the Turkish occupied north has been asphalted while the buildings of the area have scaffolds covered with a blue safety net which depicts balloons and human figures while big flower pots adorn the area.

    The opening of the crossing point is being covered by a number of journalists from Cyprus and overseas while a small ceremony is being be held in the presence of Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talats aide, Ozdil Nami, as well as Nicosia Mayor Eleni Mavrou, the Turkish Cypriot representative of the occupied area of Nicosia, as well as members of the diplomatic corps.

    Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the islands northern third.
