  • [01] CB GOVERNOR - ECONOMY

Cyprus Central Bank Governor Athanasios Orphanides called for caution regarding the prospects of the Cypriot economy, mainly due to the inflation tendencies, the continuing rally of oil prices and the overheating of the Cypriot economy.

Orphanides was received on Tuesday by President Demetris Christofias. During the meeting, the prospects of the Cypriot economy as well as the Euro area forecasts were discussed. Cyprus is a member of the Euroarea as of January 1, 2008.

``The prospects are relatively good,`` Orphanides said in statements after the meeting, adding however ``at this moment our only great concern is the inflation tendencies existing in the Cypriot economy as well as in the Euro area.``

    [02] SWEDEN - CHRISTOFIAS

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt has extended an invitation to Cyprus President Demetris Christofias to visit Sweden.

In statements to the press after a meeting with President Christofias, Ambassador of Sweden to Cyprus Igmar Lindahl said he conveyed Christofias the invitation by the Swedish Prime Minister, noting that he also expressed his countrys support for the future efforts Christofias will make on the Cyprus issue.

Asked how Sweden will contribute to efforts for a Cyprus settlement, the Ambassador said the Cyprus problem is first of all a problem for the Cypriots, adding that we are hoping that the matter will be brought forward at the meeting of the two leaders (of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities) and Sweden like the other European countries, would like to support efforts in any way we can.

    [03] HOUSE - NEW PRESIDENT

The House of Representatives plenary will elect the new President of the parliament on Thursday, since its President Demetris Christofias was elected President of the Republic.

Deputy Director of the House Socrates Socratous said that on Thursday the four new AKEL MPs would first be sworn in and then the new President would be elected.

A candidate needs 50% plus one vote to be elected President of the House. If no candidate secures this percentage, a second election is held and the candidate to secure two fifths of the votes is elected. If again no candidate secures the necessary number of votes, then a third election is held and the candidate with the most votes is elected.
