[01] RUSSIAN FM CYPRUSRussian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov has said that his country supports negotiations aiming at the unification of Cyprus.Lavrov also said that Russia would not change its stance regarding the role of the UN and its respect towards UN resolutions in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem. Speaking at a joint press conference with visiting Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Babacan, Lavrov said ``we will support the negotiating process so that the sides agree on how to implement UN resolutions and how to restore Cyprus` unity with consensus and taking into consideration the interests of all sides.`` According to the Russian news agency RIA-Novosti, Lavrov said that Moscows stance on a Cyprus settlement remains the same. A solution should be sought on the basis of UN decisions and with the agreement of all interested sides, he added. [02] EDEK - SUPPORT CHRISTOFIASThe Movement of Social Democrats EDEK has decided to support the candidacy of House of Representatives President and Secretary General of the leftwing AKEL party Demetris Christofias in Sundays second and final round of presidential elections in Cyprus. Member of the European Parliament and former Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides is the other candidate who will contest the run off election. He is mainly supported by rightwing Democratic Rally party.The members of EDEÊ Central Committee were called to decide on the Political Bureaus proposal to back Christofias candidacy. A total of 109 members of EDEKs Central Committee voted for Christofias candidacy, five voted against and two abstained. [03] PRESIDENT PAPADOPOULOS STATEMENTPresident of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos, respecting the free will of the citizens of Cyprus, will not attempt to influence, either directly or indirectly, the vote of the citizens in the run off presidential elections.In a statement at the Presidential Palace, following the results of last Sundays poll that ended his re-election plans, President Papadopoulos assured that he would always be present, beside the people, in pursuit of the solution of the Cyprus problem that ``we deserve,`` adding that Cyprus has today favourable prospects and conditions for even better times. [04] EDUCATION MINISTER - 15th INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION FAIRWith the participation of universities, technological education institutions and colleges from 18 countries, Cyprus 15th International Education Fair will take place here February 28 March 2, 2008.Speaking during a press conference, Education and Culture Minister Akis Cleanthous said some of the issues on which the Fair will focus are innovations introduced in the education of Cyprus, Europe and abroad, the work done in the educational institutions of Cyprus and the potentials for studies in Cyprus, Greece and other countries.
